Filmmaker Seeks Producers (and more)
Jul 22nd, 2003, 12:20am

Experienced director/writer with strong, humorous script, now meeting with producing- and P.M.-minded persons based here in Toronto -- people who’d like to help create a new style of intelligent, clever, visually-literate comedy.

Project: “Bonded Pairs” -- a very unconventional, half-hour mockudrama, complete with its own commercials. Theme: the modern struggle between mating drives and mated lives. Style: combines allegory and satire in a whimsical, tongue-in-cheek way -- it’s parody with a heart, designed for grown-ups with a brain.

Planning to shoot this Fall. Requires large ensemble cast (possibly ACTRA TIP?), many locations, different shooting styles (even multiple formats) -- lots of production challenges.

Skills required: everything related to assembling and running an ambitious, low-budget production: budgeting, scheduling; contact-making, deal-getting; assembling/contracting/managing of cast, crew, gear & locations; permits, permissions, & releases; and general production organizing, plus good sense of humor (especially for when you first see the budget!). Ideally should already have a network of industry contacts, plus a flair for promotion and publicity.

Pay is honorarium level only (to cover expenses), with of course full accreditation and VHS/DVD copies for all involved. Goal is a well-crafted, good-looking, and smart-sounding indie short, with vigorous promotion of the finished product (festivals, TV, etc.). Also want to pursue this new style of humor in longer form film/TV venues down the road.

But first step is the script -- and finding people who actually “get” what it’s trying to do. So let’s talk: send me an e-note with a resume and/or bio; I can send you more info about me, about the project, and even a complete script -- and we’ll see if we’re on the same, cheerfully-warped wavelength.

Thanks.
